Don’t wait for the best time
I clearly remember the day a gentleman approached me with a unique design for a new type of mechanic’s wrench. While I have little or no knowledge of tools, I do know one of the leading patent attorneys in the country. I promptly called him, and since he was a friend, he was willing to meet with us at his home on a weekend. I accompanied the gentleman with his prototype wrench to the patent lawyer’s home, and we were welcomed into his study. The gentleman proudly showed the patent attorney the wrench he had designed, and the attorney began laughing uncontrollably. I was about to question his rude and insensitive response when he reached into a desk drawer and took out a shiny carrying case that he opened to reveal a set of wrenches virtually identical to the one that the gentleman had brought. The attorney explained that he had done the patent work for these revolutionary new wrenches three years earlier, and the new wrenches had made his client very wealthy.
The gentleman who had accompanied me to the attorney’s home dejectedly tossed his prototype into a trash can beside the attorney’s desk and muttered that he’d had the prototype sitting in the back of his drawer for more than 15 years. Whenever confronted by an idea, concept, or inspiration, remember the Latin phrase Carpe diem, and seize the day.
As you go through your day today, remember ideas come to us for a reason and for a season.
